Recently I’ve become aware of the word contentment. A word that has been out of my sight (out of sight, out of mind) for some years. Disgust rises to the back of my throat as I think the word , as though the very idea of contentment has been outlawed . . . become taboo.
And of course it has!
As the machinery of consumerism got up to speed through the 60s/70s/80s contentment had to be outlawed. What was the good of a contented consumer! It became apparent, and soon enough became self evident, that contentment was not part of human nature.
We’ve been suckered! And how easily!
I can see the placards waving above the heads of the crowd. "Bring Back Contentment". "We Have A Right To Be Contented". "Peace And Contentment This Christmas".
